Sonja is a remarkable individual with a diverse background in electrical engineering, utilities, and artificial intelligence. As a former college professor, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team. Her unique perspective includes representing herself in court multiple times, which has fueled her passion for empowering individuals to effectively navigate the legal system.

Currently serving as CEO at Courtroom5, Sonja has made it her personal mission to provide people with the tools and resources they need to represent themselves confidently in court. Her dedication to enhancing access to justice aligns perfectly with our mission at Legal Aid of North Carolina.

Sonja’s commitment to the legal community extends beyond her role at Courtroom5. She holds a prominent position on the Leaders Council of the Legal Services Corporation, the primary funding source for legal aid programs in the nation. Additionally, she is a founding member of the Justice Technology Association, a trade organization that brings together direct-to-consumer legal tech companies and nonprofits, driving innovation in the legal industry.

In recognition of her groundbreaking work, Sonja and her co-founder Debra Slone were honored as “Legal Rebels” by the American Bar Association in 2023. This accolade underscores their significant contributions to advancing access to justice and leveraging technology in transformative ways.
